An all-encompassing project brief: a complete redesign, renovation, and rebranding of a 1960s-era Holiday Inn in Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood, catering to out-of-town guests as well as around-the-corner residents. The original motel was stripped to its bare bones and built back up using carefully selected materials: cement flooring, tiled walls, in-house millwork, painted brick, and judicious use of marble.
We designed custom lighting, which was fabricated locally, and beautiful walnut case goods were fabricated in both Detroit and Northern Michigan. We outfitted every space, from guest rooms to common areas, with colorful, clean-lined furniture and custom design, while salvaging light fixtures to incorporate into guest rooms.
Found old typewriters inspired the concept behind the Burrough’s Lounge, a space where one of Detroit’s most famous spoken-word poets spent his last days. In the spirit of creative collaboration, a long list of local artists were recruited to contribute work, including various exterior murals by Ouzi, Don Kilpatrick, Michelle Tanguay, and Ellen Rutt.
