Our goal was to provide Sanders’ new flagship in Clinton Township an interior as iconic as its signature bumpy cake. Hexagonal field tile, an iconic tiled logo, and striped awnings over upholstered window benches give an inspiration nod to classic ice cream shops, while the overall space — understated and sophisticated with signature design elements — allows the candy and confections to take center stage.
Like the confections they create, the shop has a beguiling and satisfying flavor to its design. Accents and details inject the bright, whimsical colors of candies and sweets, while structural elements and fixtures deliver the deep, savory colors of chocolate and caramel.
Modern touches include polished concrete floors and an exposed black ceiling; liberal use of beautiful white oak for columns, beams, milled paneling, shelving, and illuminated sign boxes; and the row of factory frame windows peeking into the bakery. A chocolate waterfall adds movement and suffuses the shop with a welcoming, sweet aroma.
