A trio of municipal project in Pleasant Ridge, Michigan prove that rooting a space in its context leads to innovative design and a cohesive aesthetic.
The Community Center Pavilion sits poolside and takes architectural cues from the brickwork and masonry of the adjacent community center building. Substantial concrete and brick piers support gracefully tapered column enclosures that hold up the gabled bronze shingle roof. The exposed structure of the roof and decorative rafter tails are finished in a soft white paint, creating the perfect oasis for pool-goers and picnickers alike.
At the Gainsboro Park Pavilion, the steel, brick and wood of the structure echo the nearby rail line for a modern spin on outdoor architecture. A black steel column and beam system carry exposed Douglas fir rafters and decking that add warmth and character to the clean lines of the steel structural members. The space is bookended by an existing city building and newly designed fireplace that mimics the materials and lines of that building. The rectilinear volume of the chimney is complimented by a long low bench with the same brick and concrete detailing. A bespoke metal screen comes complete with an ornate, but functioning lock, giving residents renting the pavilion access to the generous fireplace.
To round out these city ptojects, Pleasant Ridge’s City Hall received a refresh befitting a government building. Traditional elements like dark paneled walls, a photo gallery of past government officials and a subtle plaid drapery are lightened by the addition of deep pumpkin chairs and oak millwork that veers away from a more classic dark wood finish. Anchoring the space is the angular city commissioner’s desk made of rift-cut oak complimented by a polished marble countertop that gently waterfalls off the edge creating an unexpected stone apron detail.
