When tasked with designing the second location for Go Sy Thai in Detroit’s historic Capitol Park, we tapped into the busy city streets of Bangkok for inspiration. The result is a space that unites the eclectic vibe of Thailand’s cosmopolitan capital city with Detroit’s own intrinsic urban character.
The historic building provided great bones, allowing us to layer bright color, hand-painted signage and modern, lantern-like light fixtures upon a foundation of raw concrete and exposed building elements. Constructed of simple board and batten siding, walls are reminiscent of out-buildings in Thailand, complemented by a decoupage wall of vintage Asian movie posters collected by the owner.
A neon sign made by local legend George Vidas reads “same same but different,” a phrase frequently used by Bangkok food vendors.
