The Elwood is an Art Moderne gem that needed a little polishing. Charles Noble designed the enameled steel structure that sat at the intersection of Elizabeth and Woodward from its inception in 1936 until 1997 when it was relocated for the construction of Comerica Park. The Elwood now sits proudly at East Adams in the shadow of the ballpark, its aerodynamic curves in stark juxtaposition to the surrounding structures.

We worked with a local design and fabrication partner, the Donut Shop, on a feature light fixture. The Elwood has been cherished by generations of sports fans and casual diners for decades. PTD is proud to continue the legacy of the Elwood by bringing a fresh design perspective to this historic space.

PTD was tasked with updating the Elwood while preserving its historic charm. PTD covered the walls with a clean white paint that allows the intricate curves of the original millwork to take center stage. The Elwood’s heritage as a favorite among sports fans is reflected in the vintage dugout bench that now boasts a brightly upholstered seat and serves as a banquette for diners. Booths are covered in catcher’s mitt leather and a pinstriped blue upholstery reminiscent of a ball player’s uniform.
